When an operator cannot pay a royalty owner, the money does not vanish. It sits in a suspense account under the owner's name, and after enough years it escheats to the state's unclaimed property fund, where it waits some more. There is a very good chance someone in your family has money in one of those two places right now.
The usual reasons: the owner died and the operator was never told who inherited; a division order was mailed and never signed; an address went stale after a move; a title question arose in the chain; or the interest is so small that checks fall under the operator's minimum payment threshold and simply accrue. None of these mean the money is lost. All of them mean nobody is going to fix it for you unless you or someone like us starts asking.
Start with the state unclaimed property databases, which are free and take minutes. Search your name and every deceased family member's name, including maiden names and initials, in every state where the family ever owned minerals: Oklahoma's unclaimed property site, Texas's ClaimItTexas, Kansas's unclaimed property search, and the multi-state search at MissingMoney.com. Money still sitting at the operator will not show up in those databases, so if you know the operator's name, call their owner relations department and ask whether anything is in suspense under the family name.
That is where most owners stall, because releasing suspense often requires exactly the paperwork that is missing: a probate, an affidavit of heirship, a recorded deed. Fixing that chain is what we do all day.
